First Look: Shinola Flagship Store Now Open In New York City

Shinola Tribeca Flagship

This week Shinola Detroit opens the doors of its flagship store in New York's Tribeca neighborhood, only the brand's second store after the one in Detroit. Shinola Creative Director Daniel Caudill gave us a tour of the new space, where you can get a hands-on look at Shinola's watches, leathergoods, bikes, and other offerings, including a number of collaborations and unique creations only available in the boutique.

The Smile Newsstand

The entrance to the store is The Smile Newsstand, a cafe run by the restaurant of the same name. There is coffee, tea, and snacks on offer, along with a selection of magazines covering everything from pop music to design to streetwear. The Smile Newsstand is open before and after store hours, so you can stop in and enjoy an espresso and the free WiFi whether you're shopping or not.

Lit By Skylight

1930s Map Sculpture, Salvaged From An Oil Company Lobby In Rockefeller Center

Entering the main store space from The Smile Newsstand, the first thing you notice is the high ceiling with a metal catwalk around the perimeter and a newly installed skylight at the back. On one wall is a huge bronze Mercator map projection of the world that dates back to the 1930s and was salvaged from an oil company lobby in Rockefeller Center. The white oak tables and the painted brick keep the store feeling airy, and the reclaimed cabinets at the back offer some contrast and house the full collection of Shinola watches.

Watches, Bikes, And Leathergoods

Throughout the store you'll also find replica watches mixed in with other Shinola products, including wallets, tablet cases, footballs, baseball mitts, and of course the bicycles. But in addition there are a number of collaborative projects like jeans from Detroit Denim and leather-wrapped bike locks from Map of Days that you can check out too. They're also offering unique pieces called "Issue of One," that are vintage and hand-made objects. Right now at the Tribeca store there is a framed silk 26-star American Flag from the 1830s, when Michigan first became a state, nonchalantly tucked behind a rack of shirts. Overall everything in the store exudes a sort of laid back Americana vibe, just like you'd expect.

Runwell and Matching Football

Most importantly though, there is finally a way to go hands-on with the Shinola watches. Pre-sale replica watches sold out quickly and those wanting to get a closer look have been limited mostly to online. Now there is a central location in New York where you can check out all the different models, colorways, and sizes with Shinola staff on-hand to help.
